The Procession of the Holy Way to the Cross takes place on the afternoon of Holy Wednesday, in which two other processions will cross our streets. Its first moment takes place in the Church of Our Mother come across the Street, inside which a brief preparatory prayer is prayed whose mission is to create the appropriate spiritual environment for the participation of all the brothers in the procession. After the same, and over the sounds of the band of his Brotherhood, the Christ of the Mercy goes out to the street. After a tour, which includes all the cathedral surroundings, it arrives at the Main Square, where the Exercise of the Holy Way to the Cross takes place. At each station, a small prayer is made and the Gospel fragment is read that more faithfully reflects the moment exposed in it. At the end of the different seasons, the Bishop makes a reflection, after which the procession returns to the Church of Our Lady of the Street, through a simple tour. There, in the atrium of the Church, an emotional farewell takes place, after which the Christ returns to the interior. From the year 1999, participates in the act a Via Crucis penitencial de Calle, made in wood by Luis Fernando Martínez. Brothers of different Brotherhoods carry in their hands the fourteen images, placed in a circular form, as they are usually found inside the temples. Each of the stations represented follows the same pattern. Its design is inspired by the one of the medal of the Brotherhood. The base of it is a flordeled cross. On the same, in its horizontal and vertical crossbars, three slits are placed that serve to create a lighting effect and give simplicity to the work. In the upper part of the cross the number of each station has been arranged, using the classic Roman numerals. In the center of the cross, by means of clear and simple identifying symbols, the subject is represented alluding to each of the stations.
The PROCESSION OF THE HOLY WAY TO THE CROSS is based on the practice of the pious exercise that was called in Latin "Via Crucis". It is a path of prayer in which one meditates and reflects on the different moments of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, some of which are recorded in the Gospels, and forming another part of the Christian tradition that has passed on from generation to generation. We do not know for sure the time when the first Way of the Cross was begun. It is believed that, in the Middle Ages, Christians who made a pilgrimage to the holy land visited the different places of Jesus' life and made a small prayer in each of these places. Possibly it was the Franciscan Fathers who unified and propagated the prayer of the Via Crucis, since from 1342 they are in charge of guarding the most precious places of Christianity in Jerusalem. With time, the different popes were in charge of extending this tradition outside of the places where Jesus lived, and the different meditations or stations were placed in the churches so that it would not be necessary to have to travel to Israel to do the penitential exercise. Later, plenary indulgences began to be granted to all those who faithfully performed the Way of the Cross. For many centuries the Via Dolorosa has had 14 stations. It was Pope John Paul II who decided to change some of the stations, adding a fifteenth: the Resurrection. However, in many places the traditional Way to the Cross is still being made; It is very typical to meet during Fridays of Lent with the prayer of the Way of the Cross in the different churches. Generally in procession, the faithful move through the interior of the church making a small tour that symbolizes the one Jesus made on his way to the cross. In Palencia, from ancient times came a penitential procession that included the prayer of the Via Crucis, on the afternoon of Holy Wednesday. Although originally the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazareno its owner, after the appearance of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Mercy is given to the latter the organization of the Way of the Cross, which takes place for the first time in 1947 . Since then, the prayer has taken place in several places in the capital of Palencia. During the first years there was a small procession that culminated in the Plaza Mayor, where the recitation of the stations and the meditations carried out by the Bishop of the city took place. In 1968, coinciding with a remodeling of the Plaza Mayor, the Via Crucis was carried out in the Holy Cathedral Church, where it continued to be celebrated for several years because it was considered a more favorable place for the gathering of the faithful. More recently, it has returned again to the place of origin, the Plaza Mayor. In recent times, this procession has undergone serious modifications. Although initially participated in it both the Christ of Mercy and a Virgin (outside the Virgin of Solitude, the Fifth Anguish or the Virgin of Sorrows), since 1999 was added a third step, the Virgen de la Piedad. In 2007, a new remodeling was undertaken in terms of the iconography to be developed in the procession, and an attempt was made to gather all the Crucified Christs of the different brotherhoods in the procession. In 2010, the organizing Brotherhood decided to leave the Main Square and move the central act to the Plaza Inmaculada, more collected and silent, in a situation that does not even experience or stay, since in the course of the procession it rains , and the Christ of Mercy is forced to take shelter in the Church of Our Mother coming from the Street. With the approval of the procession of the pardon in 2011, the Brotherhood decided to focus all its efforts on it, and to convert the Via Crucis into a non-processional Penitential Act, centered on the image of the Christ of Mercy, which only the Virgin would accompany of Soledad. In 2013, it was decided to recover the organization of the procession of the Holy Way to the Cross, and to emulate its former splendor, new steps are included in the payroll: Our Mother of Pain and the Coronation of Thorns of the True Cross, and the Christ of Medinaceli of his homonymous brotherhood.
